Build a luxury, sustainable modular Kelowna home

For many of us, the term prefabricated homes brings images of mobile home or cheap, temporary house with little connection to luxury and sustainable living. I come across an article in the National Post on the weekend about a US Santa Monica-based developer of modern, prefabricated sustainable homes partnering with a niche real Toronto real estate developer. The modular pieces are being manufactured offsite in a factory in Winnipeg which has been designing and building quality prefabricated, modular structures for more than 50 years.

www.livinghomes.com brings high design to low-impact modular homes. They design, built prefabricated homes conscious about the setting, property where it will be placed. Often their homes can be assembled over the course of three days on site and feature high-quality, environmentally sustainable finishes and features: bamboo, cork, recycled porcelain and glass tile, recyceled quartz, using electricity generated by the sun, concrete mixed with recycled materials.

Cost-savings is not the focus of these high end, luxury sustainable modular homes but rather.....

"attention to the aesthetics, form and function is as important as all of its green attributes -- and there are plenty of those. The modular construction significantly reduces the amount of waste that ends up in landfills and features such as photovoltaics, triple-paned Argon gas insulated windows and doors, geothermal heating and cooling systems, on-demand hot water heating units, rainwater catchment and grey water ready systems -- the list goes on -- help minimize the homes' ecological footprint. At the same time, these houses are also great to look at. "We want to stress that not only is this green but it's a marriage of eco-consciousness to very hip, contemporary, modern design," Mr. Campbell says. "We don't do gables, turrets or English Tudor. It's decidedly modern." And beautiful. And that's the point."
