ECO: Prefab, eco-friendlly, and -- round American homebuilder cuts no corners

An American homebuilder specializing in eco-friendly, circular prefabs is making inroads in Canada. Deltec Homes, of Asheville, N.C., has shipped its energy-efficient homes to Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Nova Scotia, and company reps say sales here are picking up. Deltec (deltechomes. com) calls itself "the original green builder:" The company powers its Asheville manufacturing plant solely with renewable energy, and it estimates that its giant solar array prevents the release of about 208 tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. Did we mention the homes are round? The circular shape means less exposed surface area -- Deltec's 1,600-square-foot Sierra model has about 650 fewer square feet than its box-shaped competitor--and its aerodynamic design keeps pressure from building up on the exterior walls. Deltec's prefab home kits are ready in five days.
