RENO'S: Starting a reno? Notify your insurance company pronto about those upgrades

The long weekend is here and for many of us that means it's reno time. "But many overlook revisiting their insurance policy to ensure their new upgrades are reflected and covered," says Irene Bianchi, vice-president claims and corporate services, RSA Insurance. In her words: "Most homeowners' policies cover contents up to a specific percentage of the total insured value of the home. If your home hasn't been insured up to its true value than you may not have enough insurance to cover the cost of replacing your contents if they are damaged or destroyed, such as a new hardwood floor buckling or a tree falling on the new addition. Remember to call your home insurance broker to let them know about the upgrades and they will update your policy as necessary. Should your house be damaged, it will also speed up the claims process and allow you to return home faster."
