Unsexy, but essential, repairs

What did you think would happen?  I know I'm going to sound like an old guy here, but I can't believe how little common sense people seem to have these days.  I've just turned 48 - not so old, really.  But I'm amazed at how everyone just thinks about the "lipstick and mascara" when it comes to where they spend their renovation dollars.  I'm seeing more and more people actually choose to ignore needed repairs on their homes and instead put their money on high-end finishes.

I do not get it.  What do they think will happen?

It's just like watching a horror movie: you now they shouldn't go into the attic.  They shouldn't read the mystery book of spells.  And they should never split up to investigate.  But they  still do it - every time. For me, that's what I feel homeowners do when I give advise to them.

Every day, I hear from people with problems with their homes - some of them big problems.  These problems could have been completely avoided if the homeowners had not put off some essential maintenance.
