B.C.'s home-renovation business is going strong this year -- and that means the home-reno ripoff business is going strong.
Homeowners who deal in the cash-only underground economy risk legal wrangles and expose themselves to scrutiny from bylaw officials, provincial safety regulators and Canada Revenue Agency, says John Friswell, president of the Greater Vancouver Home Builders Association.
"Because renovation is a hot trend, there is ample opportunity for fly-by-night operators to take advantage of trusting homeowners," Friswell says.
The association predicts a record $7 billion will be spent on home renovation in B.C. this year.
To help homeowners make sound choices, the association is presenting a spring home-renovation seminar on May 13.
The seminar runs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Croatian Cultural Centre at 3250 Commercial Dr.
Those attending will be steered through design and planning, legal issues, choosing a renovator, municipal permits and living through a renovation.
Among the presenters are award-winning renovators, an interior designer, a construction lawyer, an energy authority and Vancouver building officials.
